Motorsport Development Engineer

Garrett’s Motorsport division is hiring a Motorsport Development Engineer who will be based in our Torrance, California facility. This person will be responsible for developing and delivering bespoke turbocharger & turbomachinery solutions for OE racing teams and racing engine manufacturers around the world. Garrett Motorsport has been a leader in the OE racing industry as a small business unit within Garrett since the 1990s. The Motorsport Development Engineer will be joining a mature, efficient, highly functional team that operates quickly to get results, with an unwavering customer focus.
The Motorsport Development Engineer will have a full-time hybrid work schedule.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Customer Programs:
- Own each program from end-to-end
- Define scope and product offerings with customer and Motorsport team
- Act as program manager to ensure all timing milestones are achieved
- Perform 1D simulation including turbocharger matching and aerodynamic evaluation
- Design components as needed in CAD and/or manage design activity
- Drive engineering activities for development including FEA, CFD, DFMEA as needed
- Jointly determine supply strategy for each phase of every project, with Operations team
- Own quality and delivery timing for hardware under your responsibility
- Perform Post Test Analysis activities including tear-down, analysis, 8D/RCCA, product improvements, and reporting
- Manage hardware returns as necessary for rebuilds, rework, or warranty including process flow in SAP system
- Create and manage ERP master data and BOMs in SAP system
- Act as primary customer-facing Engineering and Customer Service Point of Contact for each of your customers
- Customer Service role includes quoting, order entry, prioritization, communication on delivery timing and shipment information
- Contribute to sales goals via order forecasting and fulfillment strategies
Platform Ownership:
- Maintain and develop Motorsport-specific product platforms
- Identify opportunities and execute improvements in product design and specification
- Own, define, and manage laboratory testing for performance and durability
Operational Excellence:
- Work closely with Motorsport Operations team on quality, manufacturing, and logistics
- Define and document manufacturing processes, both existing and new
- Work with Motorsport Quality Technicians to assure quality of parts and assemblies, as the responsible engineer
- Take opportunities to improve our low-volume production capabilities
Engineering Development:
- Define processes, conduct research, identify and complete specific skill and knowledge training as needed
- Effectively liaise with other groups within Garrett regarding new technologies, and drive your responsible projects to completion using collaboration with internal resources
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or other related engineering discipline
- 3+ years of experience with developing and/or launching products in automotive, racing, or similar industry
- Up to 10% travel to supplier, manufacturing, customer sites, and/or races
- Ability to work autonomously in the day-to-day job, while staying connected to the team
- Comfortable communicating with customers including their engineering, sales, and management personnel
- Strong technical and analytical skills
- Ability to network internally & leverage other parts of the organization
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in any or all of the following: turbomachinery, internal combustion engines, high speed electric motors, power electronics, hydrogen fuel cell systems, hydrogen combustion
- Experience with turbocharger-engine matching and/or 1D system analysis for combustion engines, including GT-Power or similar
- Proficiency in business topics such as costing, pricing, and strategy
- Experience in CAD: CATIA V5, OnShape, or similar
- Experience with SAP or other ERP system usage
Pay Range
The salary range for this role is between $99,800 and $118,000.
*Note that this range represents the pay range for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. Starting rate of pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered, education, training, and/or experience.
